Veteran renovator Naomi Findlay

Veteran renovator Naomi Findlay’s latest project Carrington House holds a special place in her heart. With over 100 renovations under her belt, the derelict property in Newcastle, NSW, is undergoing a massive transformation at the hands of Findlay, while she documents the entire process for her online community. She says this is “without a doubt one of the worst” properties she has taken on.

When I saw the property I felt really connected to it in the sense that it needed help. “This isn’t something I would do if I wanted to do a quick flip,” she says. “But when I saw the property I felt really connected to it in the sense that it needed help.”

Each room is being documented and the ‘deliberately slow’ process posted. Findlay and her team have been led to believe the home was originally constructed during the 1880s, starting life as a stone tailor’s cottage, and so the design inspiration pays homage to that fact.

“I wanted to adorn the Gyprock in jewels. I didn’t want plain walls. I’m wanting the actual home to feel like it’s being rebuilt and embraced,” says Findlay. “I feel like then, the home will 100 per cent give back to whoever is inside it.”

At this stage in the renovation, things are going according to plan. Findlay’s “vision” for the property is remaining intact, and the only issues she and the team have faced are in regards to the age and condition of the property – issues she says are easily managed when you have a great team behind you.

Findlay plans to use the completed home as a workspace and studio. Next up, Findlay and her team will tackle the back section of the home, and she is adamant that even though this will be an almost entirely new section of the property, it will still blend in with the old.

“I never want to create an old section and a new section. The new section must be sympathetic to the old,” she says. “It’s important for me that it doesn’t look like a cut-and-paste modern extension.” Findlay plans to use the completed home as a workspace and studio while offering a commercial space for photoshoots and film opportunities.
