Renovating with Shelley Craft

Renovation superstar Shelley Craft wanted to complete this beach shack rejuvenation in record time and Gyprock and Cemintel were ready to help.

“With CSR we were able to choose products that not only complemented the old girl but gave her a new lease on life and at least another 70 years looking good.”

What was old is new again

The first challenge was removing the asbestos from this 1950s build, both inside and out. The asbestos was out and taken away by the end of week one, leaving the house as nothing but a frame with a roof!

This can be an expensive process at the best of times, so an affordable material was needed to reclad the exterior. That’s where Cemintel Cladding Sheets come in!

With a material cost of just over $3000, Shelley was able to reclad her entire house with a safe, Australian-made product. With a wide range of sizes available to suit a variety of wall heights and widths, she was able to minimise waste and installation time, and therefore cost.

I was incredibly surprised at the cost effectiveness of the Cemintel sheeting. So much so, that we could afford to do the adjacent garage as well all within the budget. I know that the words ‘asbestos removal’ certainly have the ability to scare people off a renovation project, but knowing that you can reclad your home with a superior product within a tight budget is amazing.”

They can easily be painted any colour you want, and Shelley didn’t shy away from making her façade stand out!

“Pacifico Cottage was built in 1950 and although I am a huge fan of ‘retro’, there is always a level of comfort and modern living that you need to consider when renovating. So our choice of colour and styling was a nod to mid-century in 2020.”

Inside

From shack to cocoon

When it came to lining the interior, Shelley wanted to make sure that her home could withstand the rigours of a young family. She was pleased to discover that there is more to plasterboard than standard Gyprock.

“Until you start to look into renovating, I’m sure most people believe all plasterboards are the same. They are not. When you build or renovate you have to think about the long term wearability, liveability and longevity of your hard work.”

Within the bathrooms, Shelley lined the walls with Aquachek, a Gyprock plasterboard specially made for wet areas. And it formed the perfect substrate on which to use gorgeous fixings from ABI Interiors, with their brushed copper range informing the design palette for all the interior finishings.

For the living areas, hallways and bedrooms, Shelley chose the best on offer; Superchek.

“Superchek is the greatest invention of all time! Seriously, you cannot hear a peep through the walls and Superchek has created a cocoon like feel to the whole home.”

The biggest test for any product you’ve used for the first time is would you choose it again?

Shelley had an emphatic answer for that!

“I would never choose to use regular plasterboard in a project again, knowing how tough and durable Superchek is. My painters even commented on how easily the paint went on the fresh sheets and this also saved time and money for us.”
