Luxurious Family Living in a Home away from Home

In a jaw-dropping collaboration between Joe Adsett Architects and Graya Construction, an old Queenslander has been transformed into a Mediterranean inspired luxury villaArcos Villa, which is the home of Rob Gray, Managing Director of Graya Construction, and his wife Meghanwas designed with the intention of creating a luxurious property which paid homage to its Queenslander roots. The couple realised the potential of the 1000m2 plot, in the trendy suburb of Paddington, just a few kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD, and set about building their ‘forever home’, a space intended for entertainment and to later accommodate family living.

“We wanted a Mediterranean feel throughout the house, and to feel like we were at an international hotel, a home away from home,” says Rob Gray of Graya Construction. Arches, curved interior details and a soft tonal palette are the defining features of Arcos, which means “arches” in Spanish. In designing the house, Rob and Meghan have picked all the best bits from Graya’s previous projects and tied them together to create the couple’s ultimate dream home with a Spanish flavour. The result is a palatial five-bedroomed, six-bathroom house which spans over three levels and contains three living rooms, a backyard patio with an outdoor lounge area, a spa and space for eight cars.

The Spanish-inspired design is reflected initially in the arches which greet you from the exterior of the property, and the experience of curves continues through a dramatic arched tunnel entry which opens into gorgeous free-flowing interior and exterior spaces, also defined by curvaceous detailing and columns. Seductive and alluring, the curved detail of the interior architecture was achieved with Gyprock Flexible plasterboard. Designed to impress, Gyprock Flexible enables specifiers, designers and installers to easily create curved walls and ceilings and add visual interest to a space. “Throughout this home, we used Gyprock Flexible plasterboard, which enabled us to achieve the desired level of finish that we wanted at an affordable price,” says Rob.

Lining every wall of this palatial home, Gyprock plasterboard has been applied with creative foresight and masterly skill to create a curved interior which allows each room of the property to flow gracefully into the next. “The beauty of this house is you’ve got so many curves as a predominant design feature and Gyprock Flexible enabled us to achieve this,” says Rob. Typically used to create feature wallsceilings and for the creative encasement of columnsGyprock Flexible is perfect for a wide range of designs and can add another dimension to interior architecture by creating wow factor features

While curves define the look and feel throughouttheir most striking application is achieved in the winding staircase which connects to all three floors. The custom made, curved stairway is absolute perfection and a further example of how Gyprock Flexible plasterboard has brought the homeowner’s vision to light, demonstrating how elevated design thinking and great craftmanship can shape basic building materials into modern masterpieces. As this is our forever home, watching the design in our heads come to life was a really special time. We tried so many things for the first time and really pushed the boundaries with the design,” says Rob.

Organic shapes continue throughout the home incorporated into large mirrors, lounge room furnishings, a bespoke kitchen island top and the bedroom and bathroom interiors. The master en-suite features a large free-standing round bathtub which is mirrored by a stunning curved shower wall, resulting in a beautifully serene space, while the hallways which connect to each room continue the theme with arched doorways and passage ways.

Open and expansive, every room is flooded with natural light and connects to an open plan, sun-drenched courtyard, which is as much a part of the home as the interior. The same neutral hues feature throughout to provide warmth and a homely feel to the opulent and spacious property.
